Whether you’re starting your first business or your tenth, you need a solid business plan. You could be starting a revolutionary company the likes of which have never been seen, but you still need a business plan. Developing a solid plan of execution will keep you on track with starting your business. Here’s how to ensure you’re on the right track with your business plan!
Why You Need a Business Plan
To be successful in business, a solid business plan is just a good starting point. Sure, I’ve seen businesses be successful without a plan, but do you really want to start out a new business cutting corners? I know I wouldn’t. Do you need a little extra shove? Here are 3 more reasons to get it done:
Accountability – Hold yourself and your staff, if applicable, accountable to be successful. When you create a business plan, you are more likely to accomplish the goals you set for your business.
Roadmap – Since you’ve laid everything out so clearly, you will have success because you have the map on how to get there in hand.
A Measuring Stick – When that first quarter rolls around, you’ll be able to look at your business plan and measure your progress. At that point you can adjust accordingly.
Examine your business plan to make sure it can act as all of these things.
Tips to Writing the Perfect Business Plan
So how in the world do you write a business plan? Grab a template and follow these tips:
Create a forecast. This is where you get to say what direction you want your business to go in and how you’re going to get it there.
Tell your story. Use your business plan to craft the story you want to tell with your business. People are drawn to stories.
Have a clear understanding of who your target audience is. This is super important. If you don’t know who your audience or customer is, how can you market your products and services to them?
Be honest with yourself. If you can’t realistically generate $10 million in a year, then don’t write a business plan that says you will.
Track your progress. Remember that measuring stick I mentioned? Use it.
Set goals. Your business plan is absolutely the place to set goals for your business.
Do more than set goals. Don’t just set goals, demolish them! Create a plan that allows you to actively pursue and meet your goals.
Know the competition. This is a part of any business. If you don’t currently have competition, you will. Know what they’re doing. Know what is working for them, and what’s not. Do it better.
Keep your eye on the future. The longevity of your business depends on you being able to evolve with the times. Stay up-to-date on your industry news and give yourself and your business every opportunity to effectively adjust to changes.
Stay On Track with Your Business Plan
So you’ve written the perfect business plan, now what? Assuming you followed the advice above, you have already positioned yourself for success. You put a lot of hard work into creating just the right plan, so share it and refer to it regularly. If you just file it away, what good will it do your business? Exactly. In your first year of business at least, it should be a prominent reference point for you.
A good general rule is to visit and revise your business plan on a yearly basis, but don’t ignore it in between. It’s more than okay to make quarterly revisions as well. Staying on top of the plan you put together so carefully will keep your business on track as well.
